so far so good; it's very nice to be connected to the outside world again.
Setup was quick and simple. Too much interference in our home for reliable wireless. We ordered two Powerline adapters and found that they worked so well we ordered a third. Video streaming much faster than wireless and more reliable. We are very happy with the product.
Easy to install, but slower than wireless which defeats the whole purpose of purchasing this unit.
After checking user reviews on this product on a variety of sites, I felt the XE103G was a good candidate for my intended use - sharing an internet connection directly from the firewall router on the 3rd floor of our house between mine and my wife's computers. We have a 1.5 Meg DSL connection from Verizon which has been completely reliable over the last 4 years.I used the included ethernet cable from one of the router ports to the first unit, which was plugged into a wall receptacle. Note that the instructions specify not to use a surge protector. This is because the RF filter on a good quality surge protector may block the different frequencies that the NetGear uses to establish a clean connection. The second NetGear unit was then plugged into the wall receptacle near my wife's computer and a Cat5 rated ethernet cable connected between them.Within a few seconds after booting her computer, an address was obtained from the router and she was able to access the Internet. While an encryption program is included on the CD in the box, I reasoned that the likelihood of a neighbor using such a connection to establish a home network was so small that, when added to the significant interference of the circuit breaker box, encryption constituted overkill.Had I decided on using wireless, I would have had to add wireless cards to our desktop computers and then added the wireless access point and faced all of the configuration issues, including WPA-2 encryption (with the attendant decrease in useable bandwidth), as well as the extra cost.As a retired systems admin, I am all too aware of the complexities and security issues that come with using wireless in a home environment and had no wish to deal with them.I believe that the NetGear product is the easiest way to create a stable and secure network in the home and I would unhesitatingly suggest it to anyone who does not see using a wired connection as a deal breaker.
I wanted to connect my Garage/office broadband internet to my wife's computer which was in the house, less than 100' away. The connection was slower than dial-up. I gave it to my brother to use with a LAN printer and it worked, but it is a printer not internet web pages or downloads.
